Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy uses the power of your mind to overcome any issues that you might have. Phobias, stress, anxiety and depression can all be treated; as can exam nerves, panic attacks, insomnia and much much more.

Hypnosis works because this is how the brain naturally learns and also makes and re-makes patterns or habits.
Each day you go in and out of hypnosis naturally without even realizing it.

For example; when you day dream in the shower, when you focus completely on a piece of work or a book that you are enjoying or when you drive to work and arrive safely but can’t really remember each part of the journey. These are all a form of ‘Trance’ or Hypnosis. I work with you to achieve a much deeper level of hypnosis than these examples and in this relaxed state amazing changes occur.

The Unconscious Mind

Your unconscious mind keeps you safe - it’s job is to look after you. Your digestion, your breathing, your eyes blinking are all controlled by your unconscious mind. Of course now that you’ve thought about blinking you probably consciously notice your eyelids moving - for a while anyway!

In Hypnotherapy we use the unconscious mind to help you even more, to take more control of your life.
Nowadays stress plays a big part in our lives but you have the tools to push stress away and become calm and relaxed. Your unconscious can teach you how.
Let me show you the way…..

My Background..

Jean Lake Copyright Melissa King

I grew up in the Midlands and went to Sheffield University. After graduation I moved to Cheltenham to do Teacher Training. I began teaching in a secondary school in Bridgwater, Somerset; building up my communication skills and enjoying the experience of helping others. Later I moved into a retail environment in Bristol, becoming interested in photography and computers. I worked for British Aerospace in Bristol in computer support for several years before moving to the south coast and working in Porstmouth and then Chichester.

I currently live in Selsey, West Sussex and I now work full time as a hypnotherapist and psychotherapist having successfully completed the Diploma Course with Uncommon Knowledge in Brighton. I am still amazed at the power of the human mind and the effect that positive thinking has on our bodies and lives. I enjoy seeing the wonderful changes that can be achieved with just one or two Hypnotherapy sessions.
I am also a qualified HypnoBirthing® practitioner, using the Marie Mongan Method for calm, relaxed birthing. In addition I have trained with Lynsi Eastburn to become a HypnoFertility practitioner in order to more fully help couples who are having issues with conception.

I am a member of the General Hypnotherapy Register, a professional body with high standards of conduct.

Type of Therapy

I practice Brief, Solution Focused Therapy. This means that we are looking for solutions to your issues and working together to allow you to move forwards more positively with your life. Just two or three sessions can make such positive changes.

Over the last 3 years I have had oustanding results with clients suffering from stress, anxiety and panic attacks. The techniques that you learn with me allow you to feel calm and comfortable again. As one person said it is 'probably the best investment I have ever made'.

I have also had great success treating insomnia and sleep issues, enabling people to actually sleep through the night for the first time in years. You will also learn techniques to get back to sleep easily should you wake.

Successfull treatment for weight issues involves increasing your self esteem as well as altering your relationship with food. I have helped many people and feedback is very positive; 'I have already dropped two clothes sizes. I feel very optimistic and I still have a clear image in my mind of the "slim me".

Phobias can be removed in one or two sessions, allowing you to live a more full and varied life. Several clients now board planes with no concerns whilst others face spiders calmly.

With habits such as smoking and drinking your brain has set down strong patterns but working with me you can break these old habits and change your lifestyle, setting up new, healthy paths.

I work with what you bring to the sessions and I love the excitement and satisfaction of seeing the wonderful changes that you can make.

HypnoBirthing® - How to give your baby the best start in life.

What if giving birth didn't have to hurt.....?

I am a fully qualified Hypnobirthing practitioner having trained with Jenny Mullen in Northampton in 2005. This method of birthing uses relaxation, self-hypnosis and visualisation techniques to ensure that birthing is the beautiful, peaceful experience that Nature intended. This is the tried and tested Mongan method and is extremely effective.

Hypnobirthing promotes special bonding of mother, baby and birthing companion and eliminates or greatly reduces the need for chemical painkillers. A mother's body is designed to work in harmony with her baby and the techniques you learn allow you to be in deep relaxation during and between uterine surges (contractions), wiping out the myth that pain must accompany birthing. Also HypnoBirthing babies are very calm - a calm birth leads to a calm baby.

What you'll learn through HypnoBirthing® is how you can confidently approach a safe, easier and more comfortable natural birth. If it turns out that you are one of the 5% of mothers that do need medical interventions then the HypnoBirthing techniques help you to relax through the procedures and still allow you to feel more in control.

We can't promise you a 'perfect' birth - no one can - but we can promise you a much, much more comfortable and relaxed birth than you would have had otherwise.

HypnoBirthing is recommended by midwives.

I am currently working with one couple per session and also running classes of 2 to 5 couples.

The ideal time to attend classes is after 20 weeks of your pregnancy, this means that you are already really aware of your baby and gives you time to learn the techniques. However it is never too late or too soon to start, some Mums only started at 36 weeks and still had the wonderful, gentle birth that they desired.

Classes are structured but informal, and FUN!

The course includes the HypnoBirthing Book and CD and many handouts.

Each course consists of 4 sessions lasting around 2.5 hours each.
Group classes are only £180 per couple;
Private Sessions are £320 per couple.
Please note that I can accept credit card payments.

Please contact me for more information or to discuss different class times.

Jo - Havant (April 07)
I did not realise that I was in labour until about an hour before Jamie was born and so the midwife only just arrived in time! I gave birth at home as there was no time to get to the hospital. I used the breathing and rainbow relaxation CD to relax as I experienced some strange sensations that were coming and going but were not at all painful. To be honest this is the reason that I did not know it was labour as I had been told just the day before by my midwife that labour pains could not be mistaken as they are 'very painful'!

Jamie is very alert and calm and nursed straight away. The midwives had not seen a first time birth that was as quick and 'easy'. I do recommend Hypnobirthing, to be honest I had my doubts that it would work, but it did! If it can work for me then it can work for anybody!

Hypnotherapy for Fertility

I am a qualified Hypnofertility Therapist having trained with Lynsi Eastburn who created the HypnoBirthing® Fertility Therapist Program. Hypnosis for fertility has been shown to increase conception rates and double the rate of success of IVF treatment.

Studies have shown that 'infertile' women utilising mind/body techniques have a 42-55% conception rate as compared to 20% for those not following these methods.

This specialised program is tailored to each individual and couple to increase the likelihood of conception. By using a wide range of therapeutic techniques many ‘blocks’ can be removed, allowing nature to take its course, or increasing the likelihood of a successful fertility treatment cycle.

You have probably gone to considerable lengths to keep your body free of toxins and away from exposure to harmful elements. Why then would you allow destructive habits and thought patterns to damage the fragile environment needed to conceive? Hypnofertility can allow you to turn your inner energy into a powerful, constructive force, it benefits both male and female parents-to-be and is completely safe. It uses no drugs and can safely be used with medical procedures such as IVF, helping those procedures to be more effective for you.

The first stage of treatment is an initial consultation and assessment and then I use this information to create your unique, individual program, consisting of four to six sessions.

FAQs

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind we all drift into several times a day. It’s simply a narrowing of attention, to the exclusion of external stimulus. Have you ever experienced being so engrossed in reading a book or watching something on TV that you don’t notice someone calling you? Or been so focused on playing a sport or game that you don't realise how much time has passed by? These are examples of common, every day trance states.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses the natural state of hypnosis to help you make the changes you want. By understanding how our minds work, I can guide you into a deeper level of hypnosis than the examples above. In this relaxed state amazing changes can occur.

The Hypnotherapy Association says:

"Hypnotherapy can generally help with any problem you're finding hard to handle on your own - thoughts and actions you'd like to banish or acquire, or emotional suffering that is too overwhelming or has gone on too long. Some physical problems can also be treated effectively by hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is a natural state of heightened awareness, where you are able to open your mind to beneficial suggestions and where you can make use of your imagination to help make positive changes in your life."

How will I feel?

You will feel wonderfully relaxed. You will be aware of everything, including my voice, but you will also be very inwardly-focused. When you come out of hypnosis you will feel wonderfully refreshed, almost as if you have had a massage.

Will I still be in control?

Yes, absolutely. I cannot make you do anything you don’t want to do. You enter hypnosis by choice and will be able to reject any suggestions you don’t agree with. You cannot get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis – just as you enter hypnosis by choice, you can come out of it by choice at any time. However, hypnosis is such a pleasant experience that you’ll want to stay in!

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Yes, in the hands of a qualified, professional hypnotherapist, hypnosis is completely safe.

How many sessions will I need?

Some problems can be dealt with in one or two sessions. Others may take a few more. One thing is for certain, you should see improvements after every session. I also guarantee you’ll leave each session feeling better than when you walked in!

I flew 'round the world without any fear of flying. I flew in a light aircraft as well which I would not have considered previously. I even jumped off the top of a mountain with a chute on my back, i.e. a tandem para point jump, thanks to you. I have recommended your services.

My IBS was getting really bad, it was very painful and affecting the way I was living my life. The session with you allowed me to let the pain go and reduce the effects. Your thoughtful and gentle nature made me feel safe, thank you Linda.

Stopping Smoking...

Gareth - Bognor (Feb 07)
Excellent treatment very relaxing and definitely worth while, prior to this treatment
I had smoked for 15 years and unsuccessfully tried to quit smoking on numerous occasions.
I have not smoked since my session with Linda (6 months ago).

---------------------

Jacqui - Selsey (Nov 07)
I can honestly say I have not touched another ciggy since my session with you (in August 2007). Two months since my last fag. I am 110% satisfied.

---------------------

A - Runcton (Feb 08)
Probably the one decision which changed my life! And the knock on effect for all my family for the better. Never mind the facts that I will have more money and smell nice! I am 100% satisfied.

---------------------

Phyllis - Bognor (Feb 08)
Thank you Linda I have not smoked from the day I saw you (in Sept 07). I had forgotten a couple of the times during the day when I enjoyed a cigarette (one of your questions) and found that time hard to overcome - but I did it and as I say I have not smoked since I saw you. Thanks again I would, highly recommend the treatment and it didn't hurt a bit.

Anxiety/Stress etc...

Alice - (Feb 09)
Very pleased and impressed with the progress noted and all that I have managed to achieve in a very short time after my first session. I hope that improvements will continue and that I am able to manage my anxieties.

---------------------

Natalie - (May 08)
After one session with Linda I left feeling like a weight had been lifted of my shoulders. The cd she gave me has come in useful, when I've felt a little stresses, also the breathing exercises have been extremely useful and I no longer suffer the anxiety/panic attacks on a regular basis. Onthe rare occasion they have happened I have been able to deal with them very quickly and without as much fear. Linda is a star!

---------------------

Lindsey - Emsworth (Feb 08)
I have certainly been a lot calmer since my session with you and the world is not such a challenging place! My short temper is much improved although this is an issue we didn't address unless I have been using it as a defence against people being critical towards me or my work. What I would have like to have found out is why I do certain things such as comfort eating or sabotaging relationships but I am asking myself why do I want to do these 'cause in the long run it makes me miserable and to be honest they don't seem as important anymore. I just wanted to say thank you for giving me that boost I needed to feel a lot better about myself and the world.

---------------------

Mike - Emsworth (Feb 08)
I stopped drinking in January 2007 and for months afterwards suffered panic attacks and anxiety. It got so bad that even contemplating doing anything 'nice' (holidaying abroad, going to a concert) induced panic. Add to that the fact that for much of the time I felt just plain ill and life had become pretty much not worth living. My GP prescribed Librium (ineffective) and recommended a counselling group, which provided moral support but had no effect on the underlying problem.

A friend suggested hypnotherapy. By now - ten months on - I was willing to try anything. I Googled and found Linda. My three sessions with Linda were probably the best investment I have ever made. It was not an instant 100% miracle cure but I now have my life back. Since seeing Linda I haven't had a panic attack, the anxiety is only occasionally felt and then only relatively mildly, and that dreadful, corrosive, persistent feeling of illness has gone.
Thank you, Linda.

---------------------

Leanne - Chichester (June 07)
I have not experienced any panic attacks since I saw you 4 months ago and I am much less anxious, I am now planning my wedding and so that will be a challenge.

---------------------

Tricia - Selsey(May 07)
The hypnotherapy has improved my way of thinking reducing the anxiety and stress significantly. I am hoping to move house in the next few weeks and although this is an extremely frustrating and stressful activity I am coping much better than I would have if I had not come along to the sessions. Listening to the tape each day is very calming .
Thinking in a more positive way also made me realise that I would be happy relocating to another area . So all in all it has been a life changing experience.

---------------------

S - Selsey (Apr 06)
A very
useful session, 9 out of 10 from me. I felt very relaxed and much more in control after one session with Linda.

---------------------

Anon - Selsey
Thanks to Linda I am feeling less stressed and much calmer generally. I liked the 'worry well' ideas and can now get a better perspective on life.

---------------------

Anon - Rowlands Castle (Aug 06)
The one-of session allowed me to re-evaluate the stress within my life and realise that it was all work related. This let me prioritise home life and get a better balance. I will certainly recommend you.

Habits...

Helen - Havant (June 06)
After one session with Linda my nailbiting has stopped. I am 100% satisfied, many thanks.

Hypnobirthing® - What parents are saying....

"Cute Little Close Up" Copyright Melissa King

Midwives were well impressed at how calm and serene I looked.
It really did make the discomfort go away and is empowering as you know what your body is doing so you work with, instead of against it.
As for the J breath, I loved it. It made the actual delivery easy-peasy. I can’t rave about it enough. Our community midwives actually said it was one of the easiest first time-mother births that they had seen in 20 years.
Marie, Northampton.

“I casually wandered into hospital with my husband, not even sure I was in labour, only to discover that I was already 6½cm dilated, and progressing fast! The midwives were astonished at how calm I was, especially for a first time mum!”
Katy, Thrapston.

“Using the breathing and relaxation techniques we were taught, I was able to get through twelve hours of contractions with absolutely no pain at all. All I could feel was pressure...I didn’t need any pain relief - not even gas and air.”
Catherine, Jersey

Personal Testimonials

Janine - Chichester (Dec 05)
I was very relaxed and calm throughout the whole process. I didn’t use any pain relief at all and I would definitely recommend HypnoBirthing®

Janine has since had a second baby using HypnoBirthing.

I did not realise that I was in labour until about an hour before Jamie was born and so the midwife only just arrived in time! I gave birth at home as there was no time to get to the hospital. Ann - Westbourne (Dec 06)
Oliver was born at 8:10 in the morning on Thursday 14 December 2006. His birthing began 2 days earlier on the Tuesday morning at 3:30am so we were in for a long stint. He arrived 3 weeks before his due date but he weighed in at 8lb 11oz so he certainly seemed ready to be born.
Although I was to be a first time Mum I had decided to give birth at home in a birthing pool. The HypnoBirthing techniques enabled me to be very calm and relaxed throughout and my husband, Richard, was with me helping me to use the visualisations and ideas and being my constant support.

The midwife was concerned at the length of the birthing and did suggest that I must be tired but I felt full of energy and persuaded her to let me continue to birth naturally in the birthing pool. Afterwards she said that I was hard to assess throughout the birthing as I was really calm, relaxed and happy. Unfortunately I did have to leave the pool as Oliver started to come into the world because his shoulders had a little trouble emerging and the midwife needed to be able to manipulate him as he came out. But throughout I felt calm and in control and used only my own endorphins to help with the birthing. Oliver is a very relaxed baby; at 7 weeks he is sleeping from 11pm to 5 or 6 am most nights and only cries when he is hungry. I had a wonderful birthing experience and would definitely recommend HypnoBirthing

Rayne - Chichester (June 08)

Linda, We are all doing well, Max is a little gem he is growing fast four teeth already & Mike thinks he will be shaving by Christmas!

Not sure how much info I can give you I was in my own little world right up until the little man joined us! I went into labour at 4pm after a brisk walk around the harbour that morning finally got things moving! I went straight upstairs to get changed, put my hypnobirthing CD on & settled down into bed. I was amazed that I could just switch into such a calm & collected state so quickly. Bearing in mind that I had fallen asleep to the CD every night for 4 months it seems that it had all gone in! Mike came home from work in no panic at 6pm & I had supper at around 7:30pm. My contractions were coming about 5 minutes apart at this stage but I was just so relaxed. Wendy came to look after Sienna at 9pm when my contractions were 3 min apart & Mike suggested a call to the hospital & that we should make a move. This was the first time I jittered a bit not wanting to leave the sanctuary of my bedroom with candles & my CD for comfort.

The journey was fine, I just kept concentrating on breathing & my babys journey down. Once at the hospital, Mike explained that we were doing the hypnobirthing method & the midwives were happy to help & seemed genuinely interested. If I'm honest I think they enjoyed the calm music but I did insist that it was put on repeat so there wasn't much choice. The music & dim lights in the labour room made for a comfortable environment. Mike held my hand gave me drinks & just kept telling me how well it was all going. This had a positive effect on the midwife too who adopted a very calm & soothing tone & used only positive encouraging comments which made me feel so safe & secure. I think I was too comfortable...because labour slowed down & Max didn't arrive until 8:04am. I was fresh, not tired & so aware of the delivery.
He came out after a lot of pushing (I know I shouldn't have but he was starting to get distressed & I was being urged to get him out sharpish) I felt every movement & it was lovely but above all I still felt in control.
I cannot describe how beautiful it was feeling him emerge into the world (& holding up a son was just icing on the cake.) He was 10lbs4oz & settled into feeding immediately! There had been maconium detected so we had to stay in for 12 hours which was sad as we were all ready to just go home.

You know my horror story & emotional state after Sienna, this just did not compare. My first labour was awful, I went into flight mode, total panic & the pain was immeasurable. I know that it was my mental state that prevented Sienna having a calm & easy birth. This time I was prepared, planned, calm & actually excited; people think I am a bit strange when I said that I enjoyed his birth, it was beautiful. I did have pain relief but not until the very end (7am) I managed to stay so calm & relaxed.

Something else that is so important to mention is that I felt fit & ready to go once I got home & had a good nights sleep there were no aches & pains, & no stitches to contend with.

I think I am in a unique position to be able to say categorically hypnobirthing does work & I will continue to fly the flag. I really hope that every woman is at least given a choice & information about this simple method. I have no doubt that it can only benefit everyone involved, Mum's, Dad's & of course the midwives.

Potentially if it was called something else there would be more takers! As soon as I mention hypnobirthing people think its all gold watches & that they will be hypnotised which is such a shame! I usually describe it as a positive mental state & deep relaxation technique - not very catchy but people tend to listen.
